Translating a powerful business experience to mobile devices.

About the project

The problem

Bloomberg is known for their terminal, a powerful business tool for professionals. However, their consumer mobile app was lacking in functionality and didn’t properly represent the breadth and depth of what Bloomberg could offer.

Research and personas.

We began by synthesizing research that had been completed and developed user personas around the various audiences.

App map & wireframes.

We began with card sorting exercises to determine what content would be important to the various personas and then created an app map from that.

From there, we wireframed and tested pages while exploring design.

Design explorations.

While the Bloomberg terminal and brand were predominantly black, white is a color Bloomberg was exploring white as an option. We also experimented with and tested different options for the global navigation.

Home: Market overviews and news

Overall, the intent of the app is to give users market and news information to help inform their business decisions. On the landing screen, we highlighted the major indicies and foregrounded the top news of the moment.

Data visualizations.

From at-a-glance overviews to detailed technicals, we looked at how different visualizations enhance understanding and interpretation.

Markets & news.

It was important to Bloomberg that news was surfaced throughout the application, with a prominent news area on every landing page. On detail pages and where we showed charts, we looked to see how we could include news sentiment to possibly contextualize market movements.

On the market landing page, we also sought to use visualizations to represent the global health of the markets.

Additionally, detail pages devoted to single companies or individuals surfaced business and market news relevant to them.

Personalization.

For registered users, the app lets users enter their portfolios and watchlists. News is served based on their holdings, and portfolios can be viewed ether as a hole or via sector.
