Abstract

Helping everyone become the director and editor of their own life stories

About the project

The problem

Creating edited videos after the fact from video clips is a time-consuming and tedious process. How might we streamline the capture and editing of videos in a mobile app?

The solution

An intuitive app that automatically stitches video clips together as they are being captured.

Proof.

Before starting any design, I shot a number of clips on a trip to India and edited them together one after the other to see how people would respond to the finished results. Results were positive and so I moved to the next stage in the process.

Initial concepting and MVP.

Before starting design, I listed out the various features that I saw in the marketplace and that I wanted to include in the app, sourcing suggestions from friends and filmmakers, and card sorted them into a timeline of activities.

1.0.

While the MVP let people record one second moments and automatically attach them to an ever-growing Glimpse, the first release added some complexity to the model, including the ability to create multiple Glimpses and name them in the list view, and simple editing that let users delete moments from their Glimpses.

In response to social media trends, we introduced the ability to shoot Glimpses in portrait, landscape, and square formats.

Feedback and features.

To determine what to build next we listened to feedback and built features based on the greatest number of requests or issues, which lead us to building out ways of duplicating and copying moments, as well as trimming and rearranging moments to allow for slightly more complex editing.

We’re continuing to listen and adjust the app accordingly while adhering to the core principle of simplicity.

We also tested features as they became available such as widgets and have toyed with the idea of an Apple Watch companion app to let people film remotely.
