Abstract

Bringing the entire Penguin Random House library home.

About the project

The problem

With a combined Penguin and Random House, corporate wanted the ability to share titles with the entire company so that employees would be aware of what titles were upcoming and what titles existed in the backlog.

Additionally, we considered how we might expose titles to consumers to encourage them to read more and purchase Penguin Random House titles, and how we might instantly deliver titles to reviewers.

The solution

A dedicated Penguin Random House eReader connected to the database of Penguin Random House titles to showcase all titles and allow users to read any title in the backlog.

The store.

Title discovery was the first challenge to overcome. While the initial concept for the app was for internal use, it was also important that we considered what the epxerience might be for a consumer if we wanted users to not only be able to browse but also purchase titles.

The reading experience.

We wanted to ensure a best-in-class reading experience. After surveying the existing landscape of eReaders, and locating gaps we had ourselves experienced, we designed an app with the greatest flexibility possible for optimizing the reading experience.

Optimized for iPhone and iPad.

It was important to us that the app looked and functioned as well on smaller screens as larger screens and so we invested the time to ensure that all of the fetures looked and worked as well at smaller resolutions.
